On a national level, The Society for Human Resource Management is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management representing more than 200,000 members. Its mission is to serve the needs of HR professionals by providing the most essential and comprehensive resources available. Founded in 1948, SHRM currently has more than 500 affiliated chapters within the United States.
The South Mississippi SHRM chapter is an affiliate and an active member of the Mississippi SHRM chapter. Our members include HR professionals from healthcare, banking, retail, utility, churches, chemical processing, telecommunications, colleges, employment agencies and private firms. Since Hurricane Katrina, several new businesses have moved into the area. Hattiesburg has also seen continued growth extending past the Turtle Creek Mall over the past several years. It is our hope that we will be able to provide support to all new HR professionals that accompany these new businesses.
The South MS SHRM, in partnership with the University of Southern Mississippi, sponsors a student chapter for students either interested in Human Resources or currently enrolled in the program. The chapter is currently in the formation stages and welcomes new students to become active members. Student members are also invited to attend our monthly meetings as we believe in providing support for the HR professionals of tomorrow.
Finally, in 2008, we are looking for ways to make our organization a viable asset to HR professionals in the area. We are excited about this and look forward to a successful 2008 and an exceptional 2009.
